Environment
We will consider the environment in all that we do, and are committed to:
- reducing our requirement for new resources;
- reusing and recycling all that we can; and
- continually innovating our products and practices to minimize our environmental impact.
The Department of Environmental Quality and the Asphalt Pavement Association of Oregon have recognized Baker Rock Resources for its environmental responsibility and stewardship.
Baker Rock led the Portland metro area in the move to warm mix asphalt production as the first producer to complete the plant modifications required for the new process. This relatively new technology produces asphalt at significantly lower temperatures, resulting in less fuel consumption and emissions during the production process.
Baker Rock also utilizes recycled asphalt pavement extensively in its mix designs. All hot mix asphalt produced at the company contains the highest permitted percentages of recycled content, which reduces the requirement for virgin oil and aggregate. Baker lab technicians are currently working on commercial mix designs that will contain as much as 50% recycled aggregate and oil.
The company has implemented several other measures to reduce its carbon footprint while still providing the best in products and services to its customers. For example:
- There is a no-idle policy for trucks and equipment.
- Crews have been trained on start-up procedures that minimize equipment warm-up time.
- New PLC controllers have been installed to minimize electrical demand.
- Traditional light bulbs have been replaced with energy-efficient compact fluorescents.
